Summary: The powerful man who groped actor Brendan Fraser was never reprimanded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Brendan Fraser will not accept his 2003 groping as a “joke.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had tried to get him to sign off on a statement, saying that when the former group president touched his taint that it was all in good fun and not sexual. Fraser said he refused.

Fraser was a huge star in the late 1990s and 2000s, leading films such as The Mummy, but he seemed to disappear from the spotlight when his career was still hot. In February, Fraser revealed in GQ that he took a hiatus after the HFPA president allegedly grabbed him in 2003. He said that the incident made him depressed and he was never invited to an HFPA event again.

The president at the time, Philip Berk, grabbed Fraser’s butt and with one finger touched the actor in the taint. “[Berk’s] left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around,” Fraser told GQ.

The HFPA, which hosts the Golden Globes and is comprised of entertainment journalists, conducted an investigation into Fraser’s claims and concluded that Berk was just joking around. According to Fraser, they tried to make him sign a statement, accepting this.

“Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance,” the statement said.

Fraser refused to sign the document, and he said that when he requested to read the probe’s findings, the HFPA refused to turn it over, citing privacy issues. The actor is now calling for Berk to resign from the organization, and he said that he refuses to see the grab as a “joke.”

“They’re kind of behaving like wolves in sheep’s clothing about it, saying, ‘Oh, we want him to heal.’ Well, the first step in that direction would be: What am I healing from? Can I please see this report? What is it?” Fraser said. “They commissioned an investigation. They received their report. And they’re not giving any details about it, and they’re not giving up the report itself.”

Berk told GQ that he faced no disciplinary actions from the HFPA. He said that Fraser’s claims were a “total fabrication.”

Fraser said that he was speaking out to help others who may have experienced something similar, according to Page Six.

“I want to find some way to make medicine out of this poison, which is not specific just to this enterprise,” Fraser said. “There’s a system in place that’s unwritten. If you abide by it, you will be rewarded. If you don’t, you won’t be. But outside of that, I want to end this episode, this chapter, in my own life and career and move on, just as I’m hopeful that others will be able to in years to come.”
