Nelson Broad merger

Summary: Nelson Mullins is combining with Florida-based Broad and Cassel to form a new law firm effective August 1.

In a big announcement, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP announced they will be joining with Broad and Cassel LLP to form a super-regional law firm. The new Florida firm, Nelson Mullins Broad and Cassel, will be effective August 1, according to the press release.

Partnerships from both firms voted in an overwhelming majority to combine forces, creating a law firm with over 725 attorneys and professionals in 25 offices throughout 11 states and the District of Columbia. The newly formed firm will give both a presence on the East Coast with over 620 attorneys and professionals in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The Atlanta office will have over 150 attorneys and professionals. The combined revenues will raise their Am Law ranking to 66th.

Nelson Mullins Managing Partner Jim Lehman said, “Our goal is always to provide comprehensive solutions to our clients, and this combination will benefit clients of both firms with added capabilities, enhanced practices and a broader geographical reach. Expanding in Florida is an important element to have the depth and breadth of a super-regional firm along the East coast, and Broad and Cassel is an ideal partner given their strong presence in Florida. On a combined basis, we will also have leading national practice groups in corporate and litigation in areas such as real estate, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and the automobile industry.”

The new firm will have a litigation practice with over 400 attorneys, a corporate practice with over 175 attorneys, a real estate practice with over 100 attorneys, and a healthcare practice with over 50 attorneys. They will also have capabilities in specialty practice areas like white collar, public finance, trusts and estates, affordable housing tax credits, and construction.

Broad and Cassel Chairman C. David Brown II added, “As Florida has grown over the past several decades to become the third largest states in the country, Broad and Cassel has grown with it to serve our clients. Many of our clients seek regional and national legal counsel outside Florida so this combination with Nelson Mullins positions us to offer them expanded services geographically and through additional practice areas. By joining together with Nelson Mullins – a firm that shares our culture, values and vision – we will be able to address client needs into the future.”

The Managing Partner will continue to be Jim Lehman. David Brown will be a voting member of the Executive Committee.

Nelson Mullins brings over 575 attorneys and professionals to the merger. They were most recently ranked No. 87 in Am Law rankings.

Broad and Cassel has 150 attorneys in Florida.
