Mozzarella sticks

Summary: The question of what ingredients are inside the new mozzarella cheese sticks at McDonald’s is being targeted in a class action lawsuit by a group of consumers.

Mozzarella cheese sticks have been added to the menu at McDonald’s restaurants across the country. The promotional pieces for the item claim that the sticks are “100 percent real cheese” and “real mozzarella” but a California man is fighting those statements. McDonald’s is already facing backlash on social media after several customers received mozzarella sticks that were empty inside.

Chris Howe is seeking $5 million in damages for himself and 40 other consumers because “the sticks are filled with a substance that is composed (in part) of starch, in violation of the federal standards of identity for ‘mozzarella’ cheese, and contrary to reasonable consumers’ expectations regarding the meaning of the term ‘mozzarella.’” Howe claims that 3.76 percent of the cheese portion of the sticks is actually starch filler.

McDonald’s denies the allegations, saying “our mozzarella cheese sticks are made with 100 percent low moisture part skim mozzarella cheese.” They will defend themselves against the lawsuit.
