The theme of this year’s celebration was “Lead by Example.” Mays was named the recipient of Diversity Award because her vision and total commitment for change and excellence, her quest for innovation, communicating her dream, and acting on it set her apart from all others. As Dean, Mays has made it a priority to promote diversity in the legal profession and serve communities by developing innovative curriculum that meets the needs of students and prepares them for success in their legal careers so that they will be productive members of the community. She highlights the specific needs of the Phoenix area with its large amount of underserved populations that fall within the justice gap such as the elderly, homeless, immigrants, juveniles, and poor. She strongly feels that not serving these communities will create “haves” and “have-nots.”
