The protester, Alisa Vinogradova, was a member of the feminist organization, Femen, according to CNN. The group had made a name for itself with its topless activism.

During Vinogradova’s ambush of the to-scale nativity scene, she called out, “God is woman!” repeatedly. Wearing only pants and shoes, Vinogradova from Ukraine rushed up to the Vatican’s popular religious attraction and tried to steal the doll of Jesus. The incident occurred in front of thousands of people who gathered to hear the Pope’s Christmas message.

Femen said that the topless activist tried to grab Jesus as a sign of protest against the “Vatican’s infringement of the rights of women to their own bodies.” This include’s the Vatican’s anti-abortion stance and condemnation of contraception.

As Vinogradova tried to steal Jesus, the Vatican police thwarted her efforts, and she was detained.

The nativity scene, as well as the Pope’s speech, has been a previous target for the feminist group, who states that their goal is to fight the patriarchy. According to KTLA, Femen’s belief is, “A child is not from a god, but from a woman! For a woman is God!”

According to The Sun, Femen’s 2014 nativity protest was slightly more successful. A topless activist was able to get Jesus out of his crib before she was nabbed by local police.

Femen has protested other political figures or organizations that they view as upholding the patriarchy. Earlier this month, a Femen activist was arrested in Ukraine for protesting Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko and his political opponent Mikheil Saakashvili. At the country’s parliament, the activist got naked and held up a paddle with the words, “Row the f-ck away.”

Earlier this year, the group’s leader Inna Shevchenko said that she and her activists would continue baring their breasts to fight for feminism.
