In April, the University of Oregon made an announcement as a way of alerting all of its students that several alleged sexual assaults were under investigation and that these sexual assaults may have involved drugs. The announcement was made so that students could protect themselves and take precautionary measures to ensure that this would not happen to them, whether it is off of the campus or on the campus. And, the dean also made it clear that if a woman is drug, she is not able to consent to sex which therefore means the intercourse is, in fact, considered rape.

However, after the announcement was made, it seems as though there was a huge debate between two sides of people, those who were supportive of the women who had allegedly been sexually assaulted and those who blamed and bashed the women, along with the university and its announcement, preaching to the students about protecting themselves from sexual assault.

A law student at the school, Ginger Kimler, was part of the reason these announcements were made by the university. Kimler made allegations against a fellow law student and she was not the only one. There was yet another female law student who made allegation that were eerily similar with one another, which is why the university chose to take action, investigate, and most importantly, make an announcement to warn other students.

Kimler says that she decided to report the sexual assault to the university because she ran into another female law student who, unfortunately, dealt with similar fate, experiencing a situation that was much like hers, with the exact same male law student. Kimler decided to come forward because she wondered if there were more victims and she was upset that he was not being held accountable for his actions.

Kimler say with her experience, she woke up in the male student’s bed and was completely naked. She could not remember a thing that happened the night before. She didn’t think of the possibility of being drugged until talking to another female law student who had the same problem with the same male law student. Both women took action, reporting the assault to their assistant dean of students for their law school. They eventually contacted the police as well.

As of right now, the male law student is not being named because he has not been charged with any crimes. Those who are victims of sexual assault are typically not named in newspapers; however, Kimler wanted her name to be out there. Kimler says she is not ashamed and has nothing to hide which is why she chose to allow her name to be published.

The attorney of the male law student says that he is denying misconduct. He does, however, admit that he had sexual intercourse with both of these women but says that the sexual intercourse was consensual. The male law student did decide to leave the University of Oregon. Some found this odd because it is usually the victims who end up dropping out of school after being assaulted, not the person committing the assault.
