On Thursday afternoon, authorities announced that the burned body found inside the cabin close to Big Bear Lake has been identified as that of Christopher Dorner, the former LAPD officer who went on a deadly rampage last week, according to the New York Times.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said that Dorner was identified using dental records, but no cause of death was issued. Dorner is believed to have killed four people over the past two weeks, including two law enforcement officers.
There was confidence prior to the body being identified that Dorner was killed in the cabin that burned to the ground following a deadly firefight with deputies. Two were injured, with one dying and the other reportedly going to recover.
“We believe the investigation is over,” John McMahon, the San Bernardino County sheriff, said at a news conference on Wednesday, prior to Dorner being identified as the body found.
Dorner’s killing spree started on February 3 when he killed the daughter of a former LAPD captain and her fiance as they sat in a car in a condominium parking garage. On February 7, Dorner pulled up next to a Riverside police cruiser and opened fire. He injured both officers, with one of them dying from his injuries.
Later that day, Dorner’s burned truck was found in Big Bear Lake, just 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Dorner was not seen again until Tuesday as he was reportedly hiding in an unoccupied cabin for a couple of days. He was seen after stealing two vehicles before hiding in a cabin that would eventually burn down after a standoff with police.
