Summary: Most people experience occasional pain or discomfort while working out, but if you experience any of these signs you should stop working out right away.

Exercise is oftentimes uncomfortable for many people—even those who are exceptionally fit. However, being uncomfortable is necessary to make change because you’re not going to improve unless you push a little past your comfort zone. However, there are certain signs that you’ve gone beyond what you need to improve and you’re actually doing more harm than good. Being fit is good for your daily energy, physical health, mental health and longevity of life. Injuring yourself through exercise is easy to do if you’re not careful and not worth the benefits of pushing through that one workout. Here are five signs that it’s time to head home from the gym.

  1. You’re having a hard time breathing. Sure, when you’re doing cardio or heavy weightlifting you’re probably going to get out of breath at certain points. However, if you’re having considerable trouble breathing and can’t take a deep breath, it’s time to slow things down.
  2. Something hurts. Sure, working out can be difficult. Your muscles may be burning and you feel pain, but the kind of pain that means you’re growing and improving your fitness. The kind of pain that you don’t want to push through is the one where you can tell you’re injuring yourself. Sharp pains, especially, should be taken seriously.
  3. You feel sick. If you’ve watched certain weight loss reality shows, you’ve probably seen people working out until they throw up. In reality, this really isn’t good for you. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, it’s time to head home and rest.
  4. You’re actually sick. When you get the flu, an infection, or even a really bad cold, your body needs to rest. When you’re resting from activity, you’re allowing your body to focus its energy on healing and you’ll probably feel better much more quickly than if you push through and continue to work out.
  5. You’re feeling chest pains or pressure. Sharp pains aren’t just for joints or muscles. If you feel a sharp pain in your chest, you need to take a break. If it happens a couple times, you really should seek out the advice of your doctor. Chest pains aren’t something to be taken lightly and it’s better to be safe.
