Summary: Do you want to create the best possible life for yourself? You need to give up these 10 things that are holding you back.

We’re so used to hearing what we need to add into our daily lives to improve ourselves, but it’s equally important to think about what we need to remove from our lives as well. While some things may seem obvious, others are more about getting rid of negativity in your life from all sources, including yourself.

What
Where

If you want to create the best life for yourself, here are 10 things you should consider giving up:

  1. An unhealthy lifestyle. You saw this one coming, right? If you want to feel your best, you have to treat your body well. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever have greasy or sugary foods, but it does mean cutting back and spending more time moving than sitting on the couch.
  2. Excuses. If you want to make it anywhere in life, you can’t let excuses hold you back. If there’s a will, there’s a way. Choose your priorities, make it happen, and remember that you’re the only person standing in your way.
  3. A short-term mindset. If you’re only thinking about what you want in the next day, week or month, you’re not setting yourself up for real success. Sure, you can put up with something for a short time to get where you want, but will it last? Work on patience and looking at things in the long term.
  4. Perfectionism. Absolutely nothing is perfect, so stop worrying about doing everything right. You will mess up and it will be okay. Oftentimes it’s better to let go of the little things as long as you’re still heading towards the bigger goal.
  5. Playing small. Rewards require risk. If you want success in your life, you can’t keep playing small. Take a risk. Know that it is okay to fail. Anyone who is successful has failed over and over again until things finally worked out.
  6. Controlling everything. You can’t control every aspect of your life, work or project. Sometimes you have to trust others to help you, and sometimes there are things you just have to give up to the universe and hope for the best. Trying to keep a tight rein on everything will only result in stress and anxiety.
  7. Toxic people. There are certain people in our lives who simply bring us down. Perhaps you feel loyal to them because they’re an old friend, they could help connect you to important people, or they are family. Limit your contact with these people as much as possible and surround yourself with positive friends who support your dreams.
  8. Your need to be liked. Going along with number seven, sometimes you just can’t care if other people like you. You can’t please everyone, so focus on being the best person you can be and doing what feels right to you. If you have to say no or ruffle a few feathers, that’s probably a good thing.
  9. The idea of an overnight success. You may see other people who look like they suddenly became a success: their business skyrocketed, they became a star in a movie, or they were promoted to a top position at a young age. The thing about overnight successes is that they usually don’t exist. What you don’t see is the hard work that person put in every single day and all the “no’s” they received in the meantime. Know that great things take time and hard work.
  10. A rigid mindset. As long as you keep your bigger goal in mind, being flexible about how you get there is important. You never know what opportunities will come your way or how you’ll change and grow as a person. Keep an open mind and things might turn out even better than you ever imagined.
