DLA Piper Welcomes Litigator Karl Buch to New York Office

Summary: DLA Piper announced on Monday morning that Phyllis Cheng has joined the firm in its Los Angeles office as a member of the firm’s Employment practice. 

It was announced by DLA Piper on Monday that Phyllis Cheng has joined the firm’s office in Los Angeles as a partner, according to a press release.

Cheng worked as the Director of California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) prior to joining the firm.

Cheng was appointed to the position by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger back in January of 2008 and then retained by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr.

While working at DLA Piper, Cheng will help regional, national and international clients when dealing with the employment laws and regulations in California.

“Phyllis is a seasoned practitioner who will complement our strong employment law practice,” said Maria Rodriguez, who heads DLA Piper’s Los Angeles Employment group. “Her impressive accomplishments in government and private practice will be an asset to the firm and our clients domestically and around the world.”

Ignacio Sanchez, the co-chair of the Government Affairs practice at DLA Piper, said the following in the release:



“Phyllis’s outstanding public service and extensive legal experience give her special insight into the intersection of law, policy and business. We look forward to collaborating with her to solve problems and address our clients’ issues on legislative, regulatory and public policy developments in California, Washington, DC, and across the nation.”

When Cheng worked in private practice early in her career she handled wrongful termination, employment discrimination, retaliation and harassment.

“Phyllis’s in-depth employment law background uniquely positions her to handle the most complex matters, from both regulatory and litigation perspectives,” said Michael Sheehan, global co-chair  of DLA Piper’s Employment practice. “She is an ideal fit for our platform and will assist on a broad range of international employment matters.”

Cheng earned her law degree from Southwestern Law School.
