Summary: The DOJ asked the FBI to share their results of the probe into the Uranium One deal.

Prosecutors from the Department of Justice have asked the FBI to explain evidence in their investigation into the Uranium One deal allegedly linked to Bill and Hillary Clinton. According to NBC News, the DOJ was acting on orders from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, prompting people to believe he may revive the dormant case.

Last month, Sessions told Congress that he was considering hiring a special counsel to look into the Uranium One deal. The Uranium One deal refers to a 2010 transaction in which President Barack Obama’s Administration allowed Russia to buy American uranium mining facilities known as Uranium One. President Donald Trump’s political rival Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State at the time, and her department was one of nine agencies that approved the deal.

A senior law enforcement official told NBC News that corruption allegations swirled around the deal but no charges were filed.  According to a New York Times report from 2015, some of those associated with the sale contributed millions to the Clinton Foundation, and former President Bill Clinton was paid $500,000 for a Moscow speech. The money received was paid by a Russian bank with links to the uranium deal.

Hillary Clinton has denied playing a role in the State Department’s sale decision, and the State Department confirmed that she was not involved.

However, Republicans, as well as Trump, have urged that Clinton be investigated, calling the uranium arrangement corrupt. In recent weeks, DOJ prosecutors have asked FBI agents who investigated the case to describe what they had uncovered, according to NBC News.

Since this summer, Representative Robert Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia, sent multiple letters to the DOJ and asked for a special counsel to this case. According to Newsweek, Republicans raised concerns that former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch may have bungled the uranium probe because of biases towards the Clintons. Republicans accused the pair of also allegedly mishandling Hillary Clinton’s private email server investigation.

Trump’s attorney Jay Sekulow told Axios that because of Comey and Lynch’s alleged conflicts of interest, it was important for a special counsel to be appointed to continue the  Uranium One investigation.

“The Department of Justice and FBI cannot ignore the multiple problems that have been created by these obvious conflicts of interests,” Sekulow said. “These new revelations require the appointment of a special counsel to investigate.”
