Law School Graduation Ceremonies Want Preet Bharara

Summary: US Attorney Preet Bharara may be famous for prosecuting Wall Street but he is also gaining fame as the hottest law school graduation speaker.

According to the Wall Street Journal the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, is now the most sought after law school graduation speaker. In three years, he has spoken at seven law school graduation ceremonies.

Some of the top program ceremonies he has spoken at have been at the University of California Berkeley School of Law, Harvard Law School, and Columbia Law School. The other three schools were Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Pace Law School, and Fordham Law School. The latest graduation ceremony that Bharara has addressed was today at the New York University School of Law.

Bharara is not only an excellent speaker, he is able to give a personal touch in each graduation speech. As a graduate of Harvard College, he addressed them by poking fun at other alums, “I arrived last evening, stopped by the Business School, dropped off some subpoenas, arrested a couple of guys for insider trading, and finished off the night sipping a scorpion bowl at the Kong.” The Kong is a popular Hong Kong restaurant in Harvard Square. The subpoenas and arrests were referring to HBS alum Rajat Gupta and others.

During his address to Columbia, where he also received his law degree, Bharara advised the graduates to choose to be a courageous leader that acts with integrity and an independent mind.

Bharara has attracted a lot of attention for tackling Wall Street and New York politicians. He supervises an office of over 220 Assistant U.S. Attorneys that handle cases including domestic and international terrorism, organized crime, narcotics and arms trafficking, civil rights violations, white collar crime, gang violence, and public corruption. His office is also responsible for prosecuting nearly 100 Wall Street executives for things such as insider trading and other financial fraud charges.
