Wealthy Family, Housekeeper, Murdered in Washington, D.C.

Summary: Local and federal authorities are investigating a quadruple-homicide in Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital has suffered a horrific tragedy. Savvas and Amy Savopoulos, aged 46 and 47, respectively; their 10-year-old son, Philip; and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, 57; were all murdered in the Savopoulos’ Washington mansion late last week, according to Radar Online.

According to Washington, D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier, three of the four victims suffered stab wounds and blunt force trauma. The house was set on fire Thursday afternoon.

Authorities believe that multiple individuals close to the family are responsible for the killings. There was no sign of forced entry into the home.

It appears that the victims were tied up at some point on Wednesday, and were held hostage until Mr. Savopoulos gave into the killers’ demands. At some point, $40,000 was dropped off at the home, according to the Washington Post.

Nelitza Gutierrez worked for the Savopoulos family for two decades as their housekeeper as well. She was close to Figueroa, and received a message from Mr. Savopoulos that stated that Figueroa was going to stay with the family overnight, that Mrs. Savopoulos and Philip were ill, and that she would not have to come to their home on Thursday. According to Fox News, this was strange, because, Gutierrez said, “Never, never did she stay over.”

Gutierrez said, “It was something very suspicious because I felt his voice was really tense. And it was different than what he had said to me before.”

Apparently, a “person of interest” was spotted on a surveillance camera. Further, the Washington, D.C. police department and the ATF investigated the home on Monday, as well as a 2008 Porsche that was stolen from the house and was later found burned in a church parking lot some 15 miles away.

The family owned a valuable art collection, according to their neighbors.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Figueroa’s family pay for her funeral expenses.
