A Diverse Pool of Aspirants
The July 2023 bar examination, a rigorous test that serves as a gateway to the legal profession in New York, witnessed participation from a diverse and sizable pool of candidates. A total of 9,779 individuals, hailing from various educational backgrounds and including both first-time and repeat test-takers, undertook the challenge of the bar exam.
Consistent Success Rates
Out of this diverse cohort of candidates, an impressive 6,481 individuals successfully navigated the intricacies of the examination, securing a pass rate of 66%. This rate remains consistent with the performance observed in the previous year, indicating a stable level of competence among candidates.
First-Time Test-Takers from ABA-Accredited Law Schools
For those embarking on their legal journey from American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law schools, the pass rate was 85%, mirroring the previous year’s performance. This commendable accomplishment showcases the high standard of education provided by these institutions.
New York’s ABA-Accredited Law Schools
First-time test-takers hailing from ABA-accredited law schools in New York exhibited a slightly lower pass rate of 83%. While this figure may appear marginally reduced, it demonstrates a strong level of preparedness among candidates trained within the state.

First-Time Candidates from Out-of-State ABA Schools
In contrast, first-time candidates originating from ABA-accredited law schools outside of New York managed to secure an impressive pass rate of 88%, showcasing the diverse and competitive nature of the bar examination.
Notable Improvements by Repeat Test-Takers
A commendable improvement was evident among the candidates who chose to retake the bar examination. Their pass rate of 29% represented a notable increase of 6% from the preceding year. Repeat test-takers constituted a substantial portion, comprising 21% of all candidates who undertook the July 2023 examination.
Global Aspirants: A Growing Presence
The examination also witnessed a significant influx of foreign-educated candidates, accounting for 35% of all test-takers. This group displayed a modest yet noteworthy 1% increase in the pass rate, elevating it from 44% in the prior year to 45% in the current year.
