On Monday, police arrested Dawnta Anthony Harris, 16, who was charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court on Tuesday for a bail review.

Harris currently does not have an attorney, according to court records. At his bail review, prosecutors said that he had stolen four cars since December.

Harris allegedly killed Officer Caprio, a four-year veteran of the force, after she responded to an afternoon call in Baltimore about a suspicious vehicle.

The 911 caller said that a black Jeep Wrangler was parked near her home and that three “suspicious subjects got out of it and were walking around” before they broke into a home. Caprio was dispatched to the scene, and she was the arriving officer who confronted Harris, the driver of the Jeep. While confronting him, he allegedly drove at her.

“[Caprio] didn’t realize that she was embarking on what would become a considerable investigation into holiday package thefts around the eastern portion of Baltimore County, involve numerous cases being independently investigated by officers in multiple precincts, would eventually result in the identification and arrest of two suspects, and would lead to the return of a very sentimental gift,” officials said.

The Jeep was abandoned after Caprio’s injury, and Harris was arrested about one block away from the vehicle. Officials said that Harris admitted that he had been in the driver seat while his three friends were committing burglary.

Caprio was taken to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in critical condition, and she was pronounced dead there shortly after.

Chief Terrance Sheridan expressed his condolences and praised Officer Caprio’s service.

“Officer Caprio is the type of officer that you want to hire … smart, athletic, energetic, and with not quite four years on the job was starting to show that she had the potential to be an excellent officer and one of the leaders of this organization in the future,” Baltimore County Police Chief Terrance Sheridan said on Tuesday. “She was the kind of officer that was going to go up in this organization and lead.”

According to The Baltimore Sun, Caprio is the first female police officer ever to die in the line of duty in the city. In the department’s 150 year history, only ten officers have been killed at work, the last being Tactical Officer Jason Schneider, 36, who died on August 28, 2013.
