Trump’s Personal Attorney Used Company Email to Handle Stormy Daniels Payment

Summary: Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen used his Trump company email to secure the payment to the adult firm star Stormy Daniels.

President Donald Trump’s lawyer used his email with the Trump Organization to arrange payment to Stormy Daniels for discretion regarding her relationship with the president. Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, wired $130,000 to the porn star to keep her quiet.

Cohen also used the email account when he was negotiating in 2016 with Daniels, legally known by the name Stephanie Clifford. Her attorney would even address Cohen at the Trump Organization as “Special Counsel to Donald J. Trump.”

Cohen has tried to put distance between Trump and the payment despite the fact that the payment has been part of a campaign finance complaint. Cohen has reiterated multiple times that the payment came from Trump’s “personal funds” for an intimate relationship Trump had with Clifford ten years ago. In a statement, Cohen said, “Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly.”

Clifford is now suing Trump, using the fact that Cohen used his Trump Organization email account instead of his personal gmail account has ammunition. Her attorney Michael Avenatti told NBC News, “I think this document seriously calls into question the prior representation of Mr. Cohen and the White House relating to the source of the monies paid to Ms. Clifford in an effort to silence her.”

The email in question was between First Republic Bank senior managing director Gary Farro and Cohen on October 26, 2016. The email states “the funds have been deposited into your checking account” but does not state which account the money was transferred from or to nor the amount of money. Trump apparently has an account at the time of the email in question. On October 27, 2016, Cohen wired the payment to the City National Bank account of her lawyer Keith Davidson.

Cohen has explained to ABC News that he uses his Trump email for personal and business purposes but that the money came from his home equity line at First Republic to another First Republic account he created for a limited liability corporation.

A letter by Democrats and other organizations is demanding more information on the Clifford payment and a payment to another porn star who claims she had an affair with Trump. The letter states, “These matters raise questions relating to potential violations of federal campaign finance and income tax laws, legal ethics and other laws; bear upon the credibility of Mr. Trump’s denials of past non-consensual sexual misconduct; and may pose risks of future efforts to extort or otherwise influence the President in his official capacity.”

Clifford signed a nondisclosure agreement when she received the payment. Her talks with the media breaks that agreement, which has resulted in Cohen issuing a secret restraining order against her from publicly releasing “confidential information” about the agreement. She argues the agreement is null because Trump never signed it.
