The California homeowner paid $430,000 for a house on the 6200 block of Anastasia Street in Simi Valley on June 22. When the new owner arrived at the house on Sunday afternoon, they walked through an open bedroom door to the horrifying sight. The body of Salvatore Orefice, 84, was lying on a bed.

The owner contacted the police, leading to an investigation by detectives. Their first move was to contact the deceased man’s girlfriend Mary Karacas, 75. When the woman arrived at the house, she admitted to detectives that the pair had gotten into a fight. During the altercation, Karacas shot Orefice. She was immediately arrested for suspicion of murder.

The detectives are still unsure how long Orefice had been dead.
