Ogletree Deakins Adds Shareholder to Washington D.C.

In a press release from Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., they announced that they have added a new shareholder to their Washington D.C. office. Former chief labor and employment counsel at General Dynamics James J. Murphy will be the co-chair of the firm’s Defense Contracting Industry Group.

Murphy had been at General Dynamics for the past ten years as their chief labor and employment counsel. He has been doing this kind of work for the past twenty years, working also at Northrop Grumman Corp. and at a major international law firm in Washington D.C. General Dynamics is a Fortune 100 company that has over 90,000 employees across the world. He helped HR executives and business leaders navigate policies, initiatives, and strategies in human resources such as labor relations employee benefits, data privacy, and compliance with federal ethic laws.

While working for both General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman, Murphy was heavily responsible for international employment matters like expatriate assignments, international data privacy compliance, and European works councils.

He also helps employers comply with the National Labor Relations Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and anti-discrimination laws.

He earned his J.D. from Catholic University of America School of Law and his B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross. He is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law, Association of Corporate Counsel, and American Employment Law Council. He frequently appears as a panelist and speaker at HR professional and management counsel conferences.

Ogletree Deakins is one of the largest labor and employment law firms representing management. They have been steadily growing their numbers for the past few months with several new additions.
