Former Judge Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison

Summary: After selling firearms to felons without a business license and then lying about it, a former Texas judge will serve 18 months in prison.

Former Williamson County Judge Tim Wright pleaded guilty to two of the nine counts from his illegal firearm business. Wright was charged with peddling firearms to felons, where some of the guns ended up in Mexico. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the two felony counts.

Wright knowingly sold guns to a felon, traded firearms without a license, and then lied to federal investigators about it. He ended up pleading guilty to one charge of giving a false statement and one charge of conducting a business with firearms without a license.

U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks was lenient on Wright because of his background. Wright lacked any criminal history, is 70 years old, and has given many years of public service. Sparks noted that while he may have made a mistake, he had still done a lot of good for the community and changed the lives of people from his job as a judge.

Wright could have been given 60 months in federal prison. He is anxious to serve his time and use it as an opportunity to help others in prison.

Daniel Jones of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms said that Wright’s conviction sends a message to everyone, “It does not matter if you are a judge, a doctor, a lawyer, or a dirtbag, you do something wrong and we will investigate you.”
