Legal Sector Adds 2,300 Jobs in April

Summary: According to the Department of Labor, over 2,000 jobs were added to the legal field in April.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. legal services sector added 2,300 jobs during the month of April, which raised employment levels to their highest point in months.

Three thousand jobs were reportedly added in February.

Last month, U.S. employers throughout the economy resumed a steady pattern of hiring. The legal sector enjoyed a slight increase in hiring as well. In April, the total number of legal jobs was 1,122,100, which is a preliminary and seasonally adjusted figure.

Last year, jobless claims hit a 7-year low.

This figure is the highest for the legal job sector since last August, and is roughly 2,000 jobs above the figure at the beginning of 2015. However, the legal sector still has quite a bit of progress to make before it will match the employment levels of 2007, before the 2008 recession. At that time, the numbers were 1,180,000, which was roughly 5% more than April’s report.

What can you do when the job market slows down?

The legal job sector does not only include lawyers and paralegals, but also legal consultants, notaries, process services, patent agents, and more. Additionally, according to Bloomberg, the numbers are only reflective of those individuals who are on the payroll. This means that not everyone is taken into account. For example, some law firm partners may not be included in such numbers.
