Former Dean of SMU Law School Arrested for Prostitution

Summary: The former dean of SMU Law School has been arrested on a charge of prostitution, according to the Collin County Sheriff’s Department in Texas.

The former dean of Southern Methodist Law School has been arrested on prostitution charges, according to The Dallas Morning News.

John Attanasio was taken into custody early on Sunday and booked into the Collin County Jail. He was released after posting $500 bond for the charge, which is a Class B misdemeanor.

Attanasio was arrested by the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers, according to the Collin County Sheriff’s Department.

A spokesperson from the Department of Public Safety Troopers did not issue a statement about the arrest.

Attanasio lives in North Dallas and has not commented on his arrest.

Attanasio worked as the law school dean from 1998 to 2013, which is when his contract was not renewed.

He is still the law school’s Judge William Hawley Atwell Chair of Constitutional Law.

“I can confirm that John Attanasio is a full-time member of the SMU law school,” a SMU spokeswoman said in a written statement Sunday. “It would not be appropriate, however, for SMU to comment on matters that are being investigated by area police.”

The school has not said if Attanasio will continue to teach his classes for the remainder of this semester.
