Former Mayer Brown CIO Sentenced to 27 Months in Prison

Summary: The former chief information officer of Mayer Brown, David Tresch, was sentenced to 27 months in prison this week for his role in defrauding the firm.

David Tresch, the former chief information officer for Mayer Brown, was sentenced to 27 months in prison on Tuesday, according to The Am Law Daily.

Tresch was sentenced for his role in a $4.8 million kickback and billing scheme to defraud the law firm.

Tresch admitted in April of 2013 that he and Nicholas Demars ran the scheme for eight years. He was ordered by U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang to pay $1.1 million to the firm in restitution.

“I’m extraordinarily grateful to an extremely bright, patient and open-minded judge, who gave us the opportunity to present our position in full,” says Tresch’s attorney, Jeffrey Steinback.

“It is not by any means an insubstantial sentence,” he says. “However, when I look at the other possibilities that could have emerged, I can only say that I’m grateful.”

Steinback said that Tresch will likely serve his sentence in a minimum-security prison and will be allowed to self-surrender in January. He will get to spend the holidays with his wife and 10 children. He will pay the restitution to the firm in installments.

Demars was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay the firm $1.1 million in restitution. He was also forced to forfeit two homes to the government.

The two first teamed up in 2004 when Tresch recommended that the firm contract employees and tech services from NS Mater, the company Demars worked at and Tresch had previously worked.

Beginning that November, Tresch began sending work to Demars in exchange for a cut of the company’s profits. False invoices were created until March of 2011 from 2010 when the contract between Mayer Brown and NS Mater ended.
