Illinois Circuit Court Judge Steps Down to Reopen Family Law Practice

Michael Ian Bender is a former judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. He has announced that he will reopen his practice in downtown Chicago. It is called The Law Office of Michael Ian Bender. The firm concentrates on family law, according to the Chicago Tribune. He originally opened the firm in the hopes of eliminating child abuse.

“I firmly believe that ‘there is no excuse for child abuse’ and I have built my firm upon this belief,” Bender said. “While on the bench I heard thousands of domestic relations cases and recognized the opportunity to protect minors available in private practice. I am proud to reopen my family law firm in Chicago where I can fiercely advocate for the rights and welfare of children.”

The practice first opened when Bender retired from his time as a judge, which was a position also held by his father, Gerald C. Bender. The practice first opened its doors in 1993 before Bender joined the firm of Nadler, Pritikin & Mirabelli LLC. While at this firm Bender focused on family law issues and fought for at-risk youths.

Bender was appointed to his position as judge in 2008 by the Illinois Supreme Court. While working as a judge he was in the Domestic Relations Division and Child Support Section. He stepped down from the bench in order to reopen his practice in 2013. Bender will focus solely on family law, protecting children and their rights. He handles cases for minors in court by being their representative, or guardian ad litem.
