Patti LaBelle: ‘Today’s Divas are Little Heifers’

Patti LaBelle is one of the most loved, veteran performers in the world. Is she considered a diva? Not in her book. The word diva, meant something totally different when it was first used to describe someone like Patti LaBelle, but if you ask her if she considers herself a diva she would definitely say no.

“That word is used so loosely that I don’t even consider myself a diva,” According to an interview taken with Pridesource, the soulful LaBelle said that while she does feel that she sings her heart out and gives more than 100 percent in every performance, that still, she wouln’t want to be called a ‘Diva,’ as the word itself is just so loosely used. The celebrated singer said there’s a negative significance to the word diva now, “because all these little heifers who can’t sing are called divas!”

“It doesn’t mean anything to me and probably to some of the other ladies who have been doing it for as long as I have: Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick,” LaBelle continued. “You know, I’m speaking for me–I don’t know if they like to be called divas–but I know I wouldn’t call them divas, because it’s not in good company.”
