John Edwards Teaming Up with Old Partner to Form Law Firm

Former two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has announced that he will soon be floating a law firm with his former law partner David Kirby and his daughter Cate Edwards. The new Edwards Kirby law firm will have offices in Washington D.C. and Raleigh.

In a statement, Edwards said, “In building Edwards Kirby, we sought a team that has championed the causes of economic and social equality in court and in hundreds of communities across the country.”

Currently, Kirby is the senior partner in Kirby & Holt, but Mark Holt, the other founding partner has already opened a new law firm last week teaming up with attorney Dave Sherlin.

With Holt leaving, Edwards will be stepping in as Kirby’s new partner with Cate Edwards and her law partner Sharon Eubanks also joining the firm.

Edwards had been accused by federal authorities of funneling campaign money to keep his affair with his pregnant mistress a secret during the 2008 presidential campaign. A jury declared mistrial on five charges and cleared him on one.

When prosecutors decided not to retry him, Edwards was already out of the race.

Kirby said in a statement, “As someone who worked alongside John inside the courtroom for many years, I know that he is undoubtedly one of the best and most committed plaintiff lawyers in the country … We see this as an opportunity to help those people who need it most and intend to uphold their basic rights in the courts.”

Edwards has continued to fight against poverty across the world. Last year he traveled to El Salvador and Haiti to work with Homes from the Heart, an organization that builds houses for the poor.

Cate Edwards came out staunchly in support of her father saying, “It’s a dream to be able to work with my dad, who inspired me to become a lawyer in the first place.”
