Ellen Page Comes Out During Speech at “Time to Thrive” Conference
In front of hundreds of people at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, actress Ellen Page came out as gay, according to ABC News. The event took place on Valentine’s Day and Page had a trembling voice during the announcement.
Page said that she is ‘tire of hiding and tired of lying by omission.’
Page, known for her work in “Juno,” delivered a speak at the “Time to Thrive” conference in Las Vegas.
“I’m here today because I am gay,” Page said. Page had to pause her speech due to a standing ovation from the audience. “And because maybe I can make a difference to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.”
Page, 26, thanked the members of the audience who work with LGBTQ teens and those who counsel the teens too. She said they inspired her to come out.
“I suffered for years because I was scared to be out,” Page said. “My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationship suffered. We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise.”
Page used Twitter to thank her fans after an outpouring of support. She also responded to a message from Kate Mara.
Page tweeted: “Thank you @HRC and everyone for all the love and support. X.”
Mara tweeted: “Hey @EllenPage…Be my Valentine? #respect.”
Page responded with, “@_KateMara: Hey @EllenPage…Be my Valentine? #respect” yes please.”
