Andrew McCabe Gave James Comey Firing Memo to Special Counsel Robert Mueller

Summary: Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has given evidence to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller now has the memo that Andrew McCabe wrote about the firing of his former boss, James Comey. According to CNN, the document “details McCabe’s impressions of a meeting with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein where the subject of Comey’s firing came up after he had been dismissed.”

A source told CNN that McCabe’s memo about the meeting with Rosenstein and an early draft of Trump’s letter to Comey about his termination were submitted to Mueller. Mueller was hired in 2017 to investigate Trump’s relationship with Russia and whether or not the country helped get him elected in 2016. Mueller is also investigating whether or not Trump committed obstruction of justice when he fired Comey in May of last year.

McCabe was fired by Trump in March, just days before he was set to retire. Because of the firing, McCabe was no longer eligible for his government pension.

After McCabe was fired, news of his secret memo surfaced. In it, McCabe wrote that Rosenstein spoke to him about how Trump wanted to blame Comey’s firing on his role in the Russian investigation, but in a finalized memo penned about Comey, Rosenstein only mentioned Comey’s mishandling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal. McCabe said that he believed Rosenstein had covered up for Trump.

According to Fox News, “Rosenstein, who’s currently facing calls to resign from members of the U.S. Congress amid his reluctance to comply with U.S. House oversight, played a role in the downfall of Comey as he penned a memo that criticized Comey for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation that the White House used to justify the firing.”

Rosenstein hired Mueller to oversee the Russia investigation after Comey was fired last year. Rosenstein made the decision because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the case, spurning ire from Trump.

Trump has lambasted McCabe as well, saying that he had never seen the man take notes. He called his memos, “fake.”

“Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me. I don’t believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date. Same with lying James Comey. Can we call them Fake Memos?” Trump tweeted.

McCabe was set to retire in March, but he was fired for allegedly leaking information to the press. His firing was authorized by Sessions.

After his firing in March, McCabe stated that he believed he was let go because of his role in the Russia investigation.

“This has to be seen in the larger context,” McCabe said. “And I firmly believe that this is an ongoing effort to undermine my credibility because of the work that I did on the Russia case, because of the investigations that I oversaw and impacted that target this administration.”
