Summary: The University of Georgia School of Law will be offering a master in the study of law program at their Atlanta campus.
The University of Georgia School of Law announced the expansion of their program offerings in Atlanta. The law school is now offering a Master in the Study of Law program.
Law School Dean Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge said, “In today’s highly regulated, legislated and litigated work environments, there is a growing need for a broader understanding of the law. By offering this program in Atlanta, we will provide a valuable, yet affordable, option for those working in the metro area whose careers would benefit from a greater familiarity with legal principles but for whom commuting to Athens would be a barrier to pursuing an M.S.L. degree.”
The program is the second academic initiative the law school has offered to help students interested in pursuing degrees in the Atlanta area. The first program was launched in the fall of 2016. The Atlanta Semester in Practice “allows students to complete degree requirements while holding full-time externships in the government, nonprofit and corporate sectors,” according to the announcement from the school.
The M.S.L. program in Atlanta gives professionals the option to do the program on a part-time basis over a two year period. They will be attending classes with traditional law students. They also have the option of taking the classes at the main campus in Athens. UGA Law in Atlanta Director Hillel Y. Levin added, “We believe this is the natural growth both of our programming in Atlanta and our role as the flagship provider of legal education in our state. In addition to better serving our students, we are providing more options for employers who know they can trust in the quality of education that we provide.”
An instructor at the Atlanta facility, teaching the American legal system course, is Judge Timothy C. Batten Sr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Levin said, “This will be an exciting experience for our students. This will be an unparalleled opportunity to learn firsthand from a prominent jurist and law school alumnus.”
The program is a 30-credit hour degree providing a comprehensive overview of the law in the areas of public policy, labor and employment, intellectual property, health care, and environmental policy law. UGA Law intends the program to be for professionals in regulated industries or interact with the government, general counsels or lawyers in a regular basis.
Those that complete the program are not eligible to take the bar exam or practice law.
