Guarini, 93, has been a big supporter of the law school, providing the funds for other programs in the past. The law school has the Frank J. Guarini Center for Environmental and Land Use Law, the Frank J. Guarini Leaders in Government Service Institute and the Guarini Government Lecture. The new program will be called the Guarini Institute for Global Legal Studies.

The global studies program will aim to provide a place for in-depth, interdisciplinary study of transnational legal and regulatory issues. It will also study how technology has transformed legal services and the global legal practice.

Guarini said, “Our increasingly international world needs lawyers who can meet the complex challenges presented by a changing global and technological landscape. Lawyers continue to be the business facilitators central to understanding other countries that knit the world together. NYU Law is already at the vanguard of global legal education and faculty research, and I am proud to support the law school in its mission to not only train future leaders in law, business, and public policy, but to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to the global legal landscape.â€

The program will support several other initiatives, including NYU Law Abroad, the Global Fellows Program, the International Conference Series, the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Justice and the scholarship of the Law School’s global and international faculty. Dean Trevor Morrison explained, “Frank Guarini embodies what it means to do well and do good. In his extraordinary career, he has been a highly successful lawyer and businessman, a dedicated public servant, and a generous benefactor.â€

Guarini, who made his money from real estate investments and practicing law, has donated millions to other schools too. This includes John Cabot University, New Jersey City University, Saint Peter’s University and his alma mater Dartmouth. SPU and Dartmouth have named institutions after him while the library at NJCU is named after him. John Cabot named their campus in Italy after him.

Guarini, who was born and raised in Jersey City, served as a congressman for seven terms after two terms in the state senate. His philanthropic work also includes donating money to institutions in Hudson County such as the Chamber of Commerce and several non-profit organizations.

He also received the Navy Commendation Medal and three Battle Stars for his military service during the Second World War. Then-President Bill Clinton also appointed him to the United Nations General Assembly. Another of his many awards and merits include the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, which is the country’s highest honor. He was bestowed by President Giorgio Napolitano when he received the award.
