Summary: Uncover eight secrets to aging gracefully and keeping up your health.

Whether you’re about to turn 30 years old or even 60, many people have a fear of aging. While it can be intimidating because many cultures are very youth-focused, it’s important to think of all the older role models from your life and know that you really can age gracefully and become that model for those younger than you. Embrace growing older rather than spending your time worrying and fearing the aging process. To help you take it in stride, here are eight secrets to aging gracefully and keeping up your health:

What
Where

  1. Keep your body moving. The more you exercise, the younger your body will feel and look. Find a few things that you love to do, but be sure to incorporate strength training to keep your bones and muscles strong as well.
  2. Don’t cake on makeup. Overdoing your makeup can often make you look older than you actually are. Rather than cake it on, use layers starting with primer, liquid foundation, a light powder, and bronzer or blush.
  3. Get out in the sun. Vitamin D helps maintain a good immune system, promote calcium absorption and protect against several diseases. Spending just 20 minutes a day in the sun can give you all the Vitamin D that you need.
  4. Get plenty of folate. While you may think folic acid is for pregnant women, low levels can actually be associated with dementia, cognitive decline and depression. Look for foods high in folate, such as leafy greens or citrus fruits.
  5. Take care of your hands. Your face and your hands are the two parts of your skin that get the most sun. While we’re always aware of our face, don’t ignore your hands as they can end up with preventable brown spots and wrinkles. Use the same products you would use on your face as you would on your hands, such as a retinoid cream before bed.
  6. Get enough sleep. This goes for just about everyone at any age, but sleep is important especially as you get older. Through sleep, your body and your mind are resting and regenerating. If you want to take care of both, make sleep a priority regardless of age.
  7. Have a job that you enjoy. Being excited about what you do every day will reduce your stress and make you considerably happier. Not only is this good for your mental health and sense of purpose, but the reduced stress improves your physical health as well.
  8. Get rid of preconceived notions. Most of us are influenced by people we know as well as pop culture, social media, movies, and more when it comes to what it means to be older. Let those go and just be yourself as you age. You don’t have to change the way you behave just because you’re getting older.
