Marijuana is taking off like a rocket in California, fueling the demand for a better understanding of the laws related to the newly legal drug. Recreational cannabis has only been legal in the state for a few weeks but the legal battles are building up over tax policies, state law, restrictive local laws, regulations and complete bans of the drug.
The University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law will be providing a one-day workshop for lawyers and those considering investing in the marijuana business, according to The East Bay Express. The workshop will answer some of the common questions regarding marijuana laws and inform participants of the state’s current laws.
The workshop to be held on February 2 is not the first of its kind. Numerous other law schools have been holding their own conferences, course and workshops on pot regulations and laws. Seattle University School of Law has held for the last five years a Northwest Marijuana Law Conference. The University of Denver Strum College of Law held a two-day conference with the help of the Cannabis Law Institute.
California expects the cannabis industry to pass $20 billion annually. With such a large amount of money involved, there will be legal battles. McGeorge Professor Francis Mootz II said, “There is confusion, as things get settled. Lawyers are poring over this, figuring out how it works. Cannabis is going from state illegal to heavily state regulated, so it’s this whole culture shift that has to take place.”
McGeorge plans to include information that insurance brokers, real estate agents, and accountants will find valuable during the workshop. They will detail possible repercussions regarding U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announcement at the beginning of the month that the government plans to crack down on the cannabis industry.
