High School Spanish Teacher Used School iPad to ‘Upskirt’ Students

Summary: A Pennsylvania high school teacher was caught using his school iPad to take photos up his female students’ skirts.

A Pennsylvania high school Spanish teacher got himself caught when he let a student borrow his iPad, which contained images of female students. The teacher, Gaspare Gambino, had been using the school-issued iPad to take pictures and videos of the upside of the skirts of his female students. The student borrowing the iPad found those pictures.

Gambino, 34, had captured the images inside his classroom and other places around the school. He was charged with 14 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy for taking the inappropriate photos at Honesdale High School in the rural borough of Honesdale about 30 miles northeast of Scranton.

The criminal complaint states that Gambino used the iPad provided by the school to “upskirt” students and to take close-up shots of the breasts of some students. The investigation of the images by officials revealed that some of the photos had been taken from his seat at the front of the classroom. They were able to conclude that 14 teenage students had their privacy violated by being secretly photographed while fully clothed.

Gambino was earning about $60,000 as a high school Spanish teacher, according to The Smoking Gun. The criminal investigation began late last year after the male student found the images on the iPad. The 14-year-old had borrowed Gambino’s iPad because he forgot his iPad at home and needed it to complete a class assignment.

While using the Apple device, the boy came across a Google Drive folder with the shocking photos. The Associated Press reported that the boy was trying to log into his Google account when he found Gambino’s file of “close-ups of the female genitalia and breasts.” The boy showed other students in the classroom what he found. One of those students quickly reported what had been found to school administrators, who seized the iPad from Gambino’s classroom.

Trooper Gregory Allen reported, “The photographs and videos depicted images of intimate parts.” Allen also explained that evidence from Gambino’s Google records prove that he had “made attempts to delete” the photos before being placed on administrative leave.

Gambino had been suspended without pay since September 2017. He was booked into the Wayne County Prison. His bail was set at $10,000 with a preliminary hearing set for January 17 in District Court for the misdemeanor charges.

The teacher had been with the school since 2015.
