Taylor Swift Files “Look What You Made Me Do” Trademark

Summary: Taylor Swift has filed trademarks to protect several phrases from her new album, “Reputation.”

Taylor Swift has a new album and a new persona, and now the singer wants to protect those recent creations. TMZ reported that Swift has filed to trademark several catch phrases and trademarks from her new album “Reputation,” and these phrases include “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now” and “Look what you made me do.”

According to docs obtained by TMZ, the young entertainer and businesswoman wants to put the phrases on merchandise like t-shirts, guitar picks, bags, and more. Last Sunday, Swift released the first music video for the new album’s song “Look What You Made Me Do” and with 19 million views in a few hours, it became the most watched video in 24 hours ever. It is safe to say that if Swift were to be awarded the trademarks, she stands to make a boatload of cash from her millions of fans.

This is not the first time that Swift had the business savvy to legally protect her brand. In 2015, she filed a trademark for numerous phrases from her last album “1989,” according to USA Today, and these phrases included “Swiftmas,” “Blank Space,” “And I’ll Write Your Name,” “A Girl Named Girl” and “1989.” Some of the trademarks to her more generic phrases such as 1989 would only apply in relation to her album, i.e. someone wanting to sell unauthorized Taylor Swift gear.

Earlier in 2017, Swift filed multiple trademarks for the word “Swifties” which is the nickname for her hardcore fans. According to Billboard, the possible reason for Swift’s decision to trademark the word is that she may be looking to create a unique experience for her fan club that she can control and capitalize on. Billboard said that in addition to filing merchandising and mobile streaming protections, she was also seeking to protect the word in the educational space, denoting a possible move into creating a music camp or learning materials.

Taylor Swift emerged on the music scene as a guitar-playing country singer when she was a teenager. She has since morphed into a mega pop star, and according to Buzzfeed, Swift made $170 million in 2015. That’s $400,000 a day.

But Swift isn’t only good at just making money. She is also generous with it. After Hurricane Harvey devastated large parts of Houston, Texas, she donated money to the local food bank. The Houston Food Bank said the amount was “sizeable” but they would not reveal the exact number.

“Taylor Swift has generously made a very sizable donation to Houston Food Bank in honor of her mother who graduated from the University of Houston,” the facility wrote on Facebook on Friday, September 1. “We thank you, Taylor, and we thank everyone for donating to help rebuild our community. #houstonstrong.”
