Trump Announces Latest Round of Federal Judge Nominations

Summary: President Donald Trump nominated 11 judges to fill judicial positions in this latest round, including high-profile federal judge positions.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has had a vacancy spot since Justice Neil M. Gorsuch was confirmed to the Supreme Court. President Donald Trump set to work in his fourth round of nominations, announcing 11 selections for various judicial positions, including Gorsuch’s previous position.

Of the nominations, three are for the high-profile federal appeals court. One of these is to fill Gorsuch’s former position in Colorado. The state Supreme Court Justice Allison H. Eid has been nominated by the president for the position. She was included on Trump’s presidential campaign list as a potential Supreme Court nominee. She has been on Colorado’s high court for over ten years, previously serving as the state’s solicitor general.

In a statement from the White House, “These nominations follow the successful nomination and confirmation of associate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court, the successful nomination and confirmation of Judge Amul R. Thapar of Kentucky to serve as a circuit judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the nomination of numerous candidates to other judgeships.”

Trump appears to be receiving much praise for his latest nominations. Judicial Crisis Network chief counsel Carries Severino praised the latest selection. She said, “Many of the nominees are well known in the conservative legal movement and have shown commitment to principled and even-handed application of the law throughout their careers. For the many Americans whose top concern in November was electing a president who would put committed constitutionalists to the courts, this is another major victory.”

Case Western Reserve University law professor Jonathan Adler added, “President Trump continues to put forward superlative judicial nominees with sterling credentials and impressive intellects. It’s especially notable that President Trump continues to pick current and former academics for the appellate bench – more so than any recent president. This will only magnify the impact his nominees are likely to have on the federal courts.”

Other nominations include U.S. District Court Judge Ralph R. Erickson of North Dakota to the 8th U.S. Circuit of Appeals, Michael P. Allen of Florida to the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, Dabney L. Friedrich of Washington D.C. as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Timothy J. Kelly of Washington D.C. as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Trevor N. McFadden of Virginia as a District Judge for the District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Amanda L. Meredith of Virginia as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, Stephen S. Schwartz of Virginia as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and Joseph L. Toth of Wisconsin as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.

Trump said he also plans to nominate Stephanos Bibas, a University of Pennsylvania Law School professor, to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Bibas directs the university’s Supreme Court Clinic, which is “one of the nation’s leading experts in criminal law and procedure.” He has argued six cases before the Supreme Court and served as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1998 to 2000. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School.
