Cocaine smugglers must be getting desperate if they think taping the drugs to their legs with duct tape is going to get past security. Smugglers were getting creative by hiding drugs in the soles of shoes, shaving cream containers and even the seams of jeans but their new method lacks any creativity.
Customs and Border Protection agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport picked up a guy with 10 pounds of cocaine strapped to his legs. Two weeks later, investigators discovered another guy with drugs taped to his lower limbs.
Mayobanex Ruiz Gomez was trying to enter New York from the Dominican Republic, which is where he lives. He began exhibiting “numerous signs of nervousness” when his suitcase was being examined. Agents then performed a physical search.
Upon searching his body, agents found about five pounds of cocaine attached to his legs with duct tape. Can you imagine trying to walk with drugs taped to your legs? Gomez had to look like a robot walking through the airport.
The estimated street value of the narcotic is $83,000. Gomez was arrested and charged with federal narcotics smuggling.
