Chadbourne to Merge with Norton Rose

Summary: Legal powerhouse Norton Rose Fulbright announced their plans to merge with Chadbourne & Parke in the second quarter.

Significantly smaller law firm Chadbourne & Parke of New York will be merging with powerhouse Norton Rose Fulbright in the second quarter. Once the merger is effective, the newly formed law firm will have over 4,000 lawyers running 58 offices in 32 countries. The United States alone will house 1,000 lawyers with 300 of them in New York alone.

The firm plans to keep the name Norton Rose Fulbright. They will have $2 billion in revenue, placing them as the No. 6 top grossing firm in the U.S. The firm will be a full-service law firm with emphasis on energy and infrastructure, litigation, regulatory, bankruptcy and restructuring, and finance work.

Norton Rose global chief executive Peter Martyr said, “Joining forces with our new colleagues, we can offer our clients significant new capabilities in New York and Washington D.C.” Norton Rose has around 3,400 lawyers in Africa, Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, and New America. In 2012, the firm was created with the merger of Fulbright & Jaworski, a Houston-based firm, and Norton Rose of Britain.

Chadbourne is known for its litigation, government affairs, and energy and project finance capabilities. Chadbourne managing partner Andrew Giaccia said, “This is really the future of legal practice, and this combination, for us, is a huge step forward into that future.”

The new firm will add a Vice Chair position to the already 11-member management board. The firms will share offices in the major cities like New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, London, Johannesburg, Moscow, and Dubai. Norton Rose will get to add locations like Mexico City, Istanbul, and Sao Paulo to its roster.
