These are the wrong reasons to work in a large law firm:

Money – Many attorneys are in it for the money. However, the amount of hours attorneys put in for the money is not a great return on value. They could be putting in the long hours to build their own business with returning clients instead of sitting behind a desk stressing all day about losing their job.

Security – Working for a large law firm does not have any more job security than working at a small one. Being forced to beg for work from other attorneys is no job security.

Intelligence – Attorneys think they belong in a large law firm because they are smart, have good grades from a top law school, and were hired by a top law firm. Even with these qualifications, it does not guarantee a future for the attorney.

Attorneys are a business that law firms invest in. You should be using law firms as a way of building your business to secure your future. Eventually you can become an attorney that brings in business but to do this you will need more than just intelligence.

You need something special to become a top attorney. These attorneys used their experience in law firms as a way to train to become entrepreneurs with bigger and better businesses. Once you become a successful law firm partner, you are in a sense running a business. Without learning this, an attorney will not be successful in a large law firm. If an attorney does not want to learn how to manage their own business, then there is no reason for them to be in a large law firm.
