Shook Hardy & Bacon to be Led by New Chairwoman

Summary: Shook Hardy & Bacon elected the head of their pharmaceutical and medical device practices to lead the law firm beginning January 1.

Shook Hardy & Bacon is making history at the law firm by electing its first ever female leader to take over on January 1. Current chairman, John Murphy, has been leading the firm for 16 years but is ready to step down.

Madeleine McDonough was a clinical pharmacist before starting her legal career with the firm in 1990. The Kansas City firm with 277 attorneys has been led by John Murphy since 2000. After he was elected to serve his third five-year term as chairman in 2010, he said it would be his last. Murphy said, “I felt that a 15-year reign was plenty long enough and it was time to turn it over to someone else.”

Some of McDonough’s best clients are Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Bayer, and GlaxoSmithKline. She regularly represents clients in litigation and regulatory compliance matters. After graduating from the University of Kansas School of Law, she got her start with Shook Hardy. She later went on to receive a masters of law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Shook Hardy has grown from a medium sized firm to a significant powerhouse in product liability defense work.
