Markel was well respected in the field of criminal law. He wrote the blog PrawfsBlawgs, which discussed criminal justice topics. In a statement to PEOPLE, Florida State Dean Donald Weidner said Markel was “very much a man of new ideas – fresh, vivacious, stimulating.” Associate dean Michelle Dempsey of Villanova School of Law called him in an interview with PEOPLE “relentlessly positive” and “made you feel good about your work.”
