One of the most emotionally traumatic moments for any victim is to face their abuser in court, and for children, this important but terrifying moment is even more difficult because the accused is often an adult. But with strong emotional support, that child can overcome their fears, and that’s where the group Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) comes in.
In October, Crime Watch Daily profiled BACA, which is an international non-profit that consists of bikers who seek to empower abused children. These extraordinary men and women not only mentor children but they escort them to therapy, school and court. Often times, BACA members sit in the court room whenever the kids testify, giving them the courage and sense of protection that was often taken away from them by abusers.
According to the BACA website, some of its members were abused themselves, which is why it was important for them to help others. One member told Crime Watch Daily that their intention was not to go after the bad guys, it was to be a support system for the children. However, they are aware that their presence is enough to scare off abusers, and that protection helps children feel safe and gives them a sense of family.
John Paul “Chief” Lilly,a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, founded BACA, according to the website. He saw there were gaps in the system and sought to create a group that filled them.
BACA is open to bikers, 18 and up. They stated that they are open to everyone from all walks of life, and they only discriminate against one type of person–abusers. To learn more about this organization, check out their website: bacaworld.org.
