The proposed $4 million would be split between the 300 women attorneys that worked as claims litigators for the company in the past five years. The other part of the settlement involves making improvements within the company to promote more women into higher paying positions.

The lead plaintiff, Lynne Coates worked out of the San Jose branch. She claimed that a male colleague that performed the same tasks as her was being paid between $150,000 and $200,000. Her salary was capped at $100,000. When she drew attention to this, she alleges that she was demoted and given lesser duties.

The settlement must still be approved by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh of the Northern District of California.

The plaintiffs were represented by Lori Andrus of Andrus Anderson and Lori Costanzo of the Costanzo Law Firm . They have proposed $1.8 million in legal fees that Farmers will pay separately.

Farmers was represented by Paul Hastings.
