New York Judge Dismisses Dr. Luke’s Lawsuit Against Kesha’s Mom, Manager

In 2014 Kesha filed a civil suit against Dr. Luke alleging emotional and sexual abuse including being drugged and raped by him during her tenure with Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records. She wants to break her contract with Kemosabe Records and its parent company Sony Music Entertainment.

Kesha experienced stardom in 2009 and a few years after but started declining in popularity. In early 2014 she checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder. After two months she left, changing her star name, and then suing Dr. Luke soon after for assault and sexual battery.

Kesha and Dr. Luke File Lawsuits Against Each Other Regarding Sexual Abuse Claims

The suit alleges, “For the past ten years, Dr. Luke has sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused Ms. Sebert to the point where Ms. Sebert nearly lost her life. Dr. Luke abused Ms. Sebert in order to destroy her self-confidence, self-image, and self-worth so that he could maintain complete control over her life and career.” Multiple examples of times when he “forced himself” on her when she was “intoxicated and drugged” where included in the details of the lawsuit.

Dr. Luke has argued that she is making things up so that she can get out of her contract. He denies all the allegations against him, referring to their relationship as brother and sister. Sony has offered her the ability to work under different conditions and the New York County Supreme Court “found that Kesha is already free to record and release music without working with Dr. Luke as a producer if she doesn’t want to.”

The New York Supreme Court denied her request for a preliminary injunction, citing a lack of details and no medical evidence to substantiate her claims of abuse. The original suit had disturbingly vivid details of the sexual and psychological abuse but the judge wanted more.
