Law Firm Asks Harvard to Spend Their Donation Differently

Summary: International law firm Milbank had donated $1 million over five years for student events, but asked that the money be spent on other things after some was used for a Palestine event.

A Harvard Law student group used money from a sponsor to hold an event supporting an independent Palestine. The group, Justice for Palestine, used $500 of a pledged $1 million from Milbank, an international law firm, to pay for pizzas at the speaking discussion. The law firm had initially pledged the money to the school over a five year period for student scholarly conferences but now wants the money be spent other ways.

Milbank was never involved with deciding how the money was spent but their logo was to be displayed on flyers and banners for events. They have rescinded their initial guidelines in order to “avoid creating any misimpressions that the firm endorses the viewpoints express by any particular student organization or journal.” The law firm wanted to make it clear that they were taking a stance on this issue or any other future controversial issues. Harvard Law will pay for student events with other resources.

The event was a talk to examine the movement to suppress advocates of Palestine. Harvard had given the group $2,000 to pay for events during the semester from Milbank’s donation.
