His album was released only a few days ago exclusively on Tidal, a subscription-based music streaming service. This caused Tidal to jump to the number-one spot on the iPhone App Store and for hundreds of thousands of people to file-sharing websites to find a free copy of the album.

He offered his album on his website for $20 for a short time until the download link disappeared soon after being released. Some suspect he removed the link in order to encourage more to obtain a Tidal subscription instead. There are reports from some customers that paid their $20 for the direct download but were unable to download the album before it was made unavailable.

With the public unable to obtain his album without subscribing to a service, more were driven to find a copy illegally. Just after being on the market for 24 hours, TorrentFreak was stating that there were around 500,000 pirate downloads of the album.

It is reported that West will be considering the issues of copyright infringement and loss of earnings since the album was supposed to be an exclusive release with Tidal.
