7 Things You Didn’t Know about Mark Geragos

Mark Geragos is a celebrity defense attorney and a celebrity in the legal world himself. Recently, he has been in the news for cases ranging from winning a settlement from a class action lawsuit against lip balm, eos to representing pop star Kesha in her ongoing legal battle with her producer Dr. Luke.

So what do we know about this man?

1. Geragos is a partner at his family’s firm.

Geragos obtained his J.D. from Loyola Marymount University in 1982. LawCrossing reports that in 1985 he passed the bar and joined his father’s firm Geragos & Geragos. The firm specializes in areas such appeals, civil rights, commercial litigation, and criminal trial practice; and it is well known for its high profile cases. For instance, CNN reports that in 1997-1998, Geragos represented Susan McDougal of Whitewater fame on embezzlement charges. In 2003-2004, he represented Michael Jackson in his molestation charge.

2. Geragos has a close relationship with the Armenian community

Geragos is of Armenian descent, and LawCrossing notes that he maintains a close relationship with the Armenian community. For example, he led a class action law suit against AXA and New York Life Insurance, companies that issued policies in the 1900s to Armenian victims of the Turkish genocide. He also serves on Armenian committees nationwide, and he has spoken about the Armenian genocide on television. (See his appearance on CNN below.)

3. Geragos has a net worth of $25 million.

At least that’s what the wealth website, The Richest, claims about Geragos, who was born on October 5, 1957.

4. Geragos and Johnnie Cochran have this one thing in common.

According to his website profile, “Geragos is the only lawyer besides Johnnie Cochran ever named “Lawyer of the Year” in both Criminal and Civil arenas.” The website also says that California Law Business Magazine named him “One of the 100 Most Influential Attorneys in California” for three years in a row, and he’s been named  one of Los Angeles’ SuperLawyers by his peers.

5. Geragos has his own podcast with Adam Corolla.

The Wrap reports that in July, Geragos teamed up with comedian and former client, Adam Corolla, to create the weekly podcast “Reasonable Doubt.” PodCastOne describes the show as “no holds barred conversation about current events, pop-culture and their own personal lives.” In addition to talking about the law on the podcast, he has also appeared as a commentator for The Today Show, Anderson Cooper 360, and Good Morning America.

6. Geragos has a ton of celebrity friends.

Los Angeles-based Geragos has defended numerous celebrities like Chris Brown, Nicole Richie, Usher, and Winona Ryder, but his Twitter shows that he doesn’t just know famous people in legal-settings. His feed seems to be a collection of big names in entertainment like Geraldo Rivera and Will Ferrell.

7. A TV show about Geragos is in the works.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures TV and The Firm are working on a TV show about Geragos’s life and his friendship with Larry King Live executive Wendy Walker. The pilot is written by Josh Berman and Allie Hagan. Deadline states that the show “follows the professional and personal relationship between a charismatic attorney and a powerhouse television producer as they attempt to control the media, the justice system, and ultimately – each other.”
