With no chance of moving forward with his new immigration laws, President Obama is taking his fight to the Supreme Court. The Obama Administration will be begging the Supreme Court to take on the case next year and make a ruling to allow the millions of undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States.
Obama has been hit with several setbacks in court, causing him to search for some other method of getting his immigration reform passed before leaving office next in January 2017. His administration had hoped that his prized immigration reform would be in action by now, but 26 states have won injunctions against it. The injunctions were upheld by a federal appeals court on Monday.
The program has not only suffered legal losses, but pledges from Republican presidential candidates to tear down the immigration laws. The Obama administration knows they likely won’t get all illegal immigrants signed up in time to make them eligible for the three-year deportation deferrals, but they want to sign up as many as they can.
First they have to get the Supreme Court to agree to take on the issue by January. If the case is not taken by then, there likely won’t be time to hold oral arguments and reach an agreement by June before the Justices leave for summer.
The latest program, the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, protects the parents of U.S. citizens. The 2012 program protected immigrants that entered the country illegally as children.
