New York Health Insurance Company Records Hacked

Summary: Health insurance provider Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is the latest company to be the victim of hackers.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield was hacked by hackers, possibly exposing the personal data of their 10 million customers. They are busy working on an investigation into the attack with security firm Mandiant.

The insurance company admitted to the incident on their website, “Excellus BCBS has been the target of a sophisticated cyber attack. The security of personal information we collect and maintain is a top priority for us. We’re taking proactive steps to address this issue and offering free identity protection services to those affected.”

The attack was revealed in early August but has been traced back to December of 2013. They determined that the hackers were able to access personal information such as name, Social Security number, date of birth, telephone number, mailing address, financial account information, member identification number, and claims information.

Excellus is working to make sure their customers are aware of the risk to their personal information being exploited and will be providing services to their customers that will monitor their personal information. They will have more information for their customers in November.

Considering other companies that have been hacked, Excellus is lucky. Anthem insurance was hacked but it affected 80 million victims. They likely won’t be the last company to be hacked either with the increasing capabilities of hackers to get past all safewalls.
