Many of us ask the question “What’s the point?” Attorneys are especially guilty of asking this question. Attorneys work hard, sacrificing time with friends and family to work. The assumption for many is that their income will be enough to afford their needs, let alone their wants. Harrison Barnes explains why attorneys often go through this tough time. He suggests figuring out what the reason is behind this question.

Social pressure makes many feel this way. They feel that they should be making more money at a more prestigious law firm that can support a better lifestyle. Those that have had the prestigious job and have great qualifications assume they will always be entitled to it. We are constantly comparing ourselves to other attorneys.

Career goals and time commitments are another factor that when taken over by others, causes an attorney to mentally struggle. There needs to be a work-life balance that the attorney can handle. When they are overworked and left unfulfilled, their long-term goals get damaged.

There is always a choice, no matter what others lead you to believe. Attorneys get under the impression that they have to do something but don’t want to. You have the choice to work at a better law firm or a different law firm, it may just take a lot of effort sometimes.

Barnes believes the main reason that attorneys ask this question is that they are looking for an excuse and reason not be accountable for their choices.
