Summary: The estate of former Illinois politician and faculty member of Northwestern University School of Law has given $5 million to the school.
The estate of former faculty member Dawn Clark Netsch has given $5 million to Northwestern University School of Law. Netsch was the first female faculty member and a long time professor before her death in 2013. The donation will go towards the Dawn Clark Netsch Scholarship Fund, which supports law students interested in public interest.
Dean Daniel B. Rodriquez said this of Dawn, “Dawn was a mentor to many generations of Northwestern Law students. It was very important to her that students with a passion for public service be able to pursue those types of careers. This bequest helps do that in two ways. It provides scholarship support for students who know, coming into law school, that they want to work in the public interest following graduation. It also provides post-graduate loan repayment support for students who discover that path while they are here.”
Netsch was elected in 1970 to the Illinois State Senate, where she served for 18 years. The year 1990 marked the time when the first woman held a statewide office when she was elected as Illinois Comptroller. She was an expert in constitutional law, helping to write the Constitution of the State of Illinois and “State and Local Government in a Federal System”.
She was married to internationally renowned architect Walter Netsch. He was best known for the Cadet Chapel in Colorado Springs at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Together they formed a grand collection of artwork. Three pieces were included in their donation to the school.
