DLA and Skadden Register for Purchase of .law Domain

Summary: Law firms Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom and DLA Piper are the first to reserve their .law domain that will become available October 12.

DLA Piper and Skadden, Arps, Slate & Meagher & Flom, two of the world’s largest law firms, are jumping at the chance to purchase URLs with a .law domain. The domain won’t be available until October 12. Skadden will own Skadden.law and DLA will own DLAPiper.law.

All major law firms currently use .com domains. Efforts in the past to give law firms their own domains such as .lawyer and .attorney but they never caught on. A .law domain will only cost between $200 and $500 a year so it’s a chance worth taking for big law firms.

Lou Andreozzi, former chairman of Bloomberg Law and CEO of LexisNexis North America is heading the efforts to sell .law to firms. They are hoping that .law will catch on like .edu has for academic institutions.

The larger firms have relationships with in-house counsels to supply their business, not the internet but purchasing the .law domain will ensure that no one else can benefit from their name. Smaller firms that purchase a .law domain will improve the branding of their lawyers.
